The Courage to be Less: Why Authentic Community Requires Dropping the Performance

Beyond the Foundation

Last month, we did the hard work of building a foundation of resilience. We named the struggle, rebranded our sensory environments, audited our protocols, and redefined what success looks like on a difficult feeding journey. But there is a reason we don’t stop at that foundation. We build on it so that we can finally move outward. This month, our theme is Community. We are kicking it off with the most counterintuitive step of all: having the courage to be “less.”

The Trap of “More”

In the trenches of low supply or IGT, the instinct is to try to be “more.” We try to be more productive, more diligent, more informed, and more capable than we feel.

We believe that if we just show up as the “most” version of a mother, we might finally earn the results we want. But this performative “more” creates a barrier. It makes us feel like we have to hide the real, messy edges of our journey when we enter community spaces. We fear that if people saw the “less” (the days we are tired, the times we rely on formula, the moments we feel inadequate) we wouldn’t be accepted.

Redefining Community through Transparency

Authentic community isn’t built on a collection of “perfect” highlight reels. It is built on the shared vulnerability of honest mothers. When you have the courage to show up as “less” (less composed, less certain, and less “hustled”) you aren’t failing. You are actually inviting others to stop performing, too.

Community thrives when we stop presenting our best selves and start presenting our real selves. By being “less” in our need to prove ourselves, we become “more” available to receive support, offer solidarity, and find the tribe that values our presence over our production.

An Invitation to the Table

This week, I want to challenge you to drop the performance. You don’t need to provide the “most” to be a worthy mother, and you don’t need to appear “perfect” to belong to this community. We are here to carry the weight together, not to watch each other run ourselves into the ground.

Join the Conversation: What is one way you feel pressured to be “more” in your feeding journey that you are ready to let go of this week? Let’s practice being “less” and more honest in the comments below.
